Adamson was educated at the University of Toronto, and worked for several major Canadian architectural firms before establishing his own practice in 1934. By the mid-1940s he was experimenting with modernist designs, eventually becoming a leading proponent of a distinctive Canadian modern architecture. His many buildings include the E. J. Pratt Library at the University of Toronto, the Ontario Power Building, and the Savoy Plaza Apartments in Forest Hill, Toronto, for which he won the Massey Medal for Architecture in 1953. His firm continues as Adamson Associates Architects.
