The Baldwin Collection of Canadiana includes an extensive collection of Toronto newspapers dating back to 1793.
The Upper Canada Gazette or American Oracle was the official newspaper of the government of Upper Canada.
Initially published in Niagara, it was relocated to Toronto (then York) when the seat of government was transferred.
On October 4, 1798, it became the first newspaper published in Toronto. The Gazette remained the only newspaper in the city for two decades.
A weekly newspaper founded by John Carey on May 22, 1820, the Observer was the first non-governmental newspaper published in Toronto.
Carey was able to publish the Observer by purchasing the press and moveable types of the Upper Canada Phoenix, which had been published in Dundas, Ontario.
