Title
Map of the property of the Honourable J. S. Macaulay
Description
John Simcoe Macaulay (1791-1855) came to Upper Canada in 1821 and had a long career in York as a politician, businessman and Surveyor General of Upper Canada. He received from his patron, John Graves Simcoe a land grant of Park Lot 9, stretching North West from Queen and Yonge.
Known as Macaulay Town, this neighbourhood housed many workingclass families. By 1845, he had sold most of the properties, and arranged for a site to be reserved in the middle of the Square, for a church to be erected for the poor -- Holy Trinity Church.
This plan shows the remainder of his estate, in 1845.
