Uptown

Description

Yonge and Bloor-the compass center for my 20 amazing years in Toronto. The library, the Bay, and the Uptown! Oh, the Uptown movie theater, my home away from home-standing in lines ups that would stretch south to the next intersection with the bookstore, and turn west to continue, sometimes reaching the Manulife. Everyone would buy their tickets, then walk down the line looking for a friend so they could 'butt in'. The conversations in anticipation of the movies, the hot rods rolling up and down the street, and the Brass Rail catching young people’s eyes as we filed into the theater.
Then up the steps, two at a time, to run inside and save spots. Two to a group minimum was best-one to keep the seats, one to buy popcorn, candy, and drinks. At last, the ceiling lights would dim and we'd be in another world.
Back into the night, talking excitedly about the best parts of the movies, then dinner at Toby's (gotta get the 'Toby's says Cheese'!), or Mickey Dees. Maybe a walk south to College for all-night Fran's, or even further to Family Fun or The Spot for some pinball and video games. Ah, but Yonge and Dundas..that's another story.
