Description

William Kingsford was an English-born soldier, surveyor, journalist, publisher, civil engineer and author. Born in London on December 23, 1819. He served in the British army, and went to Canada, where he was engaged in surveying work. He has a place in literature for his History of Canada in 10 volumes (1987-1898), a work of careful research, though not distinguished for purely literary merits. In 1886, he was elected a member of the Royal Society of Canada, and he was an honorary Doctor of Laws degree (LLD) of Queen’s University, Kingston, and Dalhousie University, Halifax. He died on September 28, 1898 at Toronto, Ontario.
