Sara Jeannette Duncan, also known as Mrs. Everard Cotes, was born December 22, 1861 in Brantford, Ontario. She attended Central School and later Brantford Collegiate Institute. She also attended the Toronto Normal School. She was the first female journalist to be employed full-time by the Toronto Globe. There she wrote under the name of Garth Grafton. She was also one of the first women members of the Press Gallery in Ottawa. 'The Imperialist' (1904) was considered her best novel. On July 22, 1922, she died in Ashtead, Surrey, England.
