Description

English poet, playwright and actor, William Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s preeminent dramatist. Often called the English national poet, his other sobriquets are the Bard of Avon, Swan of Avon, Will Shakespeare and The Bard. While his birthdate is unknown, records show that he was baptised on April 26, 1564 at Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 37 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. Today, his plays are highly popular and constantly studied and reinterpreted in performances with diverse cultural and political contexts. The genius of Shakespeare's characters and plots are that they present real human beings in a wide range of emotions and conflicts that transcend their origins in Elizabethan England. Shakespeare died on April 23 1616 and was interred at Trinity Church, Stratford-Upon-Avon.
