Weston Branch celebrates 100-year milestone

Weston Branch Staff 2014

On November 22nd, 2014, Weston Branch celebrated its 100th year of service, in its current location, to the community of Weston, Ontario.

The fun-filled event kicked off at 9:00 a.m. with grooving music from Calypso band Shak-Shak, while children were entertained throughout the day with special outdoor drop-in visits from Toronto Fire, RCMP officers on their gallant steeds, and entertained indoors with magician Incredibrent and Stan the Balloon Man!

Official Ceremonies took place at 11:00 am hosted by Weston Branch Head Cathy Bunce, and featured speeches by Toronto Public Library Board Chair Michael Foderick, President of the Toronto Public Library Foundation Heather Rumball, local Ward 11 councillor Frances Nunziata, Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) Laura Albanese, and Member of Parliament (MP) Mike Sullivan.

Refreshments were served in the program room (the old children's department prior to the 1981 expansion of the branch) where customers gazed upon a special photographic exhibit highlighting key moments in the branch's rich history.

After a selection of seasonal songs from the local York-West Active Living Centre's choir, the Weston Library Centenary Project was officially launched by Cherri Hurst of the Weston Historical Society, Project Leader Christie Paschakis and Project Coordinator Anila Qasim.

The day ended with a dance and musical ensemble by local youth troupe, Keepin' it Real.

Pictures from the celebration will be added soon, so keep your eyes on this space!
