Kanvinde was educated at the Sir J. J. School of Arts in Mumbai, and at the Harvard School of Design, where he was a student of Walter Gropius. On his return to India, he joined the Council for Industrial and Scientific Research, and with partners, formed the firm of Kanvinde, Rai and Chowdhury, which created many buildings, including the National Science Centre, Delhi. In 1985 he won the Indian Institute of Architects Baburao Mhatre Gold Medal for lifetime contributions to the field of architecture.
